The Great Manchester Cycle

You have heard how great the city of Manchester is,  now the city of Manchester brings you the Great Manchester Cycle.  The Great Manchester Cycle aims to highlight what is great about cycling in what is now the UK’s second city.  Manchester is a haven for cyclists and this event will allow you to cycle through the city streets without the worry of busy main roads and the danger of cars, lorries and vans that populate the city streets.

Starting and finishing at Eastlands the Great Manchester Cycle will take place on Monday 4th of June which I am sure will be a lovely early summer day, ideal for mounting your iron horse and tackling the city center streets.  the route will take in parts of Manchester, Trafford and Salford and give access to traffic free roads in the city center and beyond.  The event will take in sites such as the Etihad Stadium, Betham Tower and Old Trafford along the way ensuring a great day out for all of teh family.

The Great Manchester Cycle is split in to three events all determined by distance.

13 miles  – This can be enjoyed by all of the family, ridden at a leisurely pace so it will suite all abilities so there is no excuse for anyone with a bike not to attend.  One stipulation is that you must maintain a speed of 7mph along the route for the safety of other serious riders.  The 13 mile event will follow one lap of this great Manchester Cycle Route.

26 miles  – Covering two laps of  the circuit you will get to see the sites of Manchester twice! The 26 mile route for the Grat Manchester Cycle will test your fitness a little more than th ee 13 mile ride but it will still be as enjoyable.  To enter the 26 mile ride you must be able to maintain a speed of 13mph.

52 miles – Imagine cycling 52 miles yet not even leaving Manchester, this fast and furious ride is only for the serious cyclists among us.  The 52 mile cycle is sure to test even the keenest of rider and it is sure to test both fitness and endurance.  To enter this ride you must be able to maintain a speed of 18 miles per hour so its not for the faint hearted.

What ever your level of ability there is a ride for you at the Great Manchester Cycle, entry prices start at only £10 with discounts for families.

The ride is part of the Great Festival of Sport that is being held in Manchester this summer, other events include the popular Manchester 10k run and the Great Manchester Swim.  For more information see the official site for the Great Manchester Cycle 2012.
